HGV Training
Staff Depot is an established driver recruitment agency, assuring candidates a high chance of finding work as soon as you qualify. You are welcome to call in for a chat and a coffee at any time.
We use approved DSA Instructors to ensure high standards of training so that all our clients achieve better than a pass grade. Mr Gus McPhillips, our DSA approved instructor is a Grade 5 Instructor, which is the highest grade achievable, he is also a fully qualified SAFED trainer.
Our vehicles are chosen to be representative of the type of vehicle you would normally find in everyday use in the industry, and are maintained to a high standard by qualified mechanics.
Our driver training takes on average 2 weeks to complete from start to finish. Once the theory test is out of the way it is time to get behind the wheel. We sort out your Test and arrange your driver training round that date.
You will need:
- A full driving licence for cars.
- A medical certificate (form D4) completed by your Doctor (Company doctor available)
- A licence application form D2
- To be over 18 (category C1) or over 21 (category C and C & E)
- You must first pass category C to get your articulated licence.
Send the D2 and D4 forms to DVLA Swansea in order to obtain your provisional LGV licence. Drivers who passed their test before 1 st January 1997 will have 7.5 tonne entitlement automatically.
There are two types of LGV Licence

Category 'C + E' - known as an 'Artic' (Articulated Lorry) - (Class 1), has a separate cab and trailer and is more complicated to drive. |
You must pass the Category C test before you can take Category C + E
We offers training in:-
- Driver Assessment
- LGV Theory
- Driver’s Hours and Tachograph
- LGV Category C1, C and C&E
- Defensive Driving Techniques
Course length can be from two to three sessions upwards, depending on driver’s experience and ability.
The theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse and the hazard perception part records you responses through the use of a computer mouse button.
You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other you will fail the whole test, and you will need to take both parts again.
The questions in each multiple choice test vary according to the category of vehicle you are hoping to obtain a Licence for, ie. A motorcycle theory test will contain specific questions that do not appear in any other test.
For the hazard perception test there are no separate versions for different vehicles, each vehicle category takes the same test, however the pass mark is different for different categories of tests.
